Poetic performance, good stories, excellent cover tunes and the Punk Rock Prom this week
East meets West in concert performance by Joseph Cassanova & Amour Mystique on Thursday at House of Rock. The eclectic band of four Corpus Christi musicians will introduce a unique set of love songs – “Amour Mystique” in a special concert performance and dinner event. Doors open at 6 p.m. A dinner buffet will be served at 6:15 p.m., followed by the 7:30 p.m. concert. “Amour Mystique” is a vibrant mix of contemporary and traditional melodies and lyrics. It is a hybrid fusion of East and West, China and America, and Old and New. The band will play love songs from their concept album – “Village of Dragon Hill — A Mystical Journey in Passion.” The lyrics are the work of Dr. Raymond Douglas Chong, a Chinese-American poet, whose poetry anthologies include Village of Dragon Hill – A Mystical Journey in Passion; Orchid Flower Love Poetry: Amorous Moods of Sensuous Passion; and Plum Blossom Love Poetry: Between Village of Dragon Hill and Gold Mountain, available on Amazon.com and www.chineselovepoetry.com. Band members include Joey Perez, Steve Perez and Chris Tapia. The group’s latest music video, “I Will Wait For You” from the concept album, “Village of Dragon Hill – A Mystical Journey In Passion” is rapidly gaining popularity in China, with thousands of views on China’s YoKu, the Chinese version of YouTube. Shot in Corpus Christi, the music video tells the haunting story of the Bamboo and Peony, separated by continents and time, and features a leading lady who traveled from China to appear in the video.
The Independent Thieves are a folk/blues duo that likes to sing good stories. The Corpus Christi group will share its good stories Thursday at House of Rock. Doors are at 9 p.m. The two guitar-playing singer-songwriters, Garrett Wieland and David King met at the weekly Executive Surf Club open-mic and soon began working on tunes together. Both fans of classic rock, folk music and Americana, the Thieves cite among their influences Van Morrison, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan and The Band. The focus of this group is to pare down the instruments and work on the songs, songs that tell stories. No frills, no smoke and mirrors, just good tunes.
Poetry and Prose will provide the Primus, Rated R will give you the Queens of the Stone Age and Eternal Idol will complete your need for Black Sabbath on Friday at House of Rock. Doors are at 8 p.m. All three bands thrive on providing authentic live interpretations of these iconic groups.
Even if you had a great high school prom, why not have an even better one with the second annual Punk Rock Prom on Saturday at House of Rock. Doors are at 8 p.m. Cupcakes and finger foods will be provided. Punk rock shots, spiked punch and punk rock pizza will be served. There will be a prom photographer on site to capture the memories.
